What Is Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on leverage, technique, timing, and strategy rather than size or strength. It allows smaller individuals to defend themselves effectively using proper mechanics and body positioning.
Our adult program includes:
Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, beginner fundamentals classes, intermediate and advanced training, structured live sparring (rolling), self-defense applications, competition preparation (optional).
Gi Jiu-Jitsu
Gi Jiu-Jitsu is the traditional form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced while wearing the gi uniform. Students use grips on the jacket and pants to control opponents, apply submissions, and develop strong technique. Training focuses on leverage, timing, and strategy rather than strength, making it a great martial art for people of all ages and fitness levels.
Gi classes teach practical self-defense, improve fitness, and build confidence in a supportive training environment. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced athlete, Gi Jiu-Jitsu helps you develop solid fundamentals and skills that can last a lifetime.
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is a fast-paced style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced without the traditional uniform. Instead of using gi grips, students control their opponent with body positioning, clinches, underhooks, and wrist control. This creates a more dynamic and athletic style of grappling that emphasizes speed, movement, and technique.
No-Gi training teaches practical self-defense, takedowns, escapes, and submissions while improving strength, conditioning, and reaction time. Classes are welcoming for beginners and experienced athletes alike, helping students build confidence, stay in shape, and develop real grappling skills in a supportive training environment.
Whether your goal is fitness, confidence, self-defense, stress relief, or competition, our Portland-area adult jiu jitsu classes meet you where you are.
One of the most common questions we hear is:
“Am I too old to start Jiu Jitsu?”
The answer is "No".
At Gracie Technics Jiu Jitsu, we have students in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is scalable — meaning it can be adjusted to your pace, fitness level, and goals.
Technique Over Strength:
BJJ is built around leverage and efficiency. You don’t need to be explosive or naturally athletic to succeed. Proper technique allows you to train safely and effectively regardless of age.
Sustainable, low impact training
unlike striking martial arts, brazilian jiu jitsu emphasizes control, balance, and positioning. This makes it ideal for adults looking for long-term, sustainable training in the Portland metro area.
Stress relief and mental focus
training jiu jitsu requires problem-solving under pressure. Many adults from Portland, Gresham, Sandy, and surrounding areas use training as a powerful outlet for stress after work.
Community & Accountability:
Our academy isn’t just a gym — it’s a team. Adults from across the greater Portland metro area train together, support each other, and build lasting friendships.
Our Students Gain:
Improved strength and conditioning, weight loss and better mobility, practical self-defense skills, increased confidence, discipline and consistency, a positive ego-free training environment
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu challenges you physically and mentally in a way few workouts can.
If you’ve never trained before, our beginner classes are structured to help you:
• Learn foundational positions
• Understand basic escapes and submissions
• Build confidence before live training
• Develop proper movement patterns
You do not need prior experience, elite conditioning, or a competitive background to start.
Many of our students begin with zero martial arts experience and quickly discover that Jiu Jitsu is one of the most rewarding decisions they’ve ever made.
Gracie Technics Jiu Jitsu provides professional instruction, structured progression, and a supportive training environment for adults of all ages.
